What is a breathalyzer? What does it do?
A breathalyzer is a machine used in DUI breath tests. The device must be calibrated or readjusted every year to assure its reading of blood-alcohol content (BAC) in an individual. The Los Angeles Police Department is required to keep records of calibration. Often, however, faulty breathalyzers are kept in service. Bad breathalyzers provide inaccurate readings.
The breathalyzer also fails to account for the individual person. That is, .08 BAC certainly would result in a different level of intoxication for a large man than for a small woman. In reality, a DUI for one might not be a DUI for the other.
